Certifications

The AALAS Certification and Registry Board certify technicians at three levels of technical competence in the laboratory animal science field: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician, Laboratory Animal Technician, and Laboratory Animal Technologist. These certifications are widely used and accepted throughout the laboratory animal science field and in most places it has become a requirement.

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician

ALAT

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technicians (ALATs) are frequently entry-level and perform the important daily tasks of animal husbandry. They commonly work under the supervision of a veterinarian, technologist, or facility manager. ALATs should understand the moral and ethical aspects of the care and use of laboratory animals. They also should have a general knowledge of regulations pertaining to the use of animals in research.

Laboratory Animal Technician

LAT

Laboratory Animal Technicians (LATs) must maintain current knowledge of husbandry methods, research methodology, and the humane treatment of animals. They may be assigned tasks related to animal husbandry, records, diagnostics, materials and supplies, training, and first-level supervision.

Laboratory Animal Technologist

LATG

Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATGs) are experienced senior-level team members. They may be assigned training, facility management, and/or supervisory duties. They must maintain a current knowledge of husbandry training techniques, research methodology, and humane treatment of animals.
